Participants are required to commit at least 36 hours for online seminar activities and approximately 12 additional hours for individual and group assignments over a period of 2 weeks. Therefore, participants are highly recommended to take two fully committed weeks to participate productively in and achieve the most from the seminar.

III.   OBJECTIVES AND LEARNING OUTCOME

Objectives

Expand YSEALI fellows’ knowledge and skills of topics related to technologies that are driving the digital society, digital economy and digital government. Specific topics will include IoT, data mining, and their applications and implications in Southeast Asia and worldwide.

Build a network with other Southeast Asian professionals for future collaboration in technology affairs, including digital transformation sector.

Learning outcomes

Upon graduation, participants are expected to have a better understanding of existing technologies for data gathering, data mining and their various applications in the society, the government and business environments in Southeast Asia and worldwide. Participants will also be equipped with knowledge related to data privacy and cyber-security.

IV.    THEME AND TOPICS

1.     Major theme – Digital Transformation (for 2021)

Two-week seminar providing an overview of digital transformation in Southeast Asia, with an emphasis on the existing technologies and their real-life applications and implications in digital society and digital economy, and digital government.

2.     Seminar topics

Topic 1 – Digital society

This topic introduces some of the state-of-the-art technologies that have emerged only recently but contributed greatly to generating data about our world and how these technologies have evolved to be more efficient in collecting and keeping only the data that would be of interest to users. The topic also discusses techniques and their real-life case studies that extract the information from the vast collected data to enhance the quality of our living environments. The applications range from environmental monitoring in agri- and aquaculture production, to pedestrian safety monitoring, urban flooding management and transportation planning.

Topic 2 – Digital economy

We are living in a digital era with an enormous amount of data being created every day and increasing. Besides the technologies discussed in topic 1, the majority of the generated data were from daily transactions and communications that people make. This topic introduces business models (e-commerce and fintech), cutting edge data mining techniques and their real-life case studies that leverage the wealth of data in the digital economy to help improve business operations and business environments (digital transformation), especially in the circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Topic 3 – Data privacy and cyber-security

This topic touches upon the issues of data privacy from various aspects, including the people’s awareness of their right to their personal information, the presumed obligations of organizations in handling personal data, and the legal framework for data privacy protection. These issues attract even more attention when it comes to tracing technologies that have been developed and deployed to help nations control the outbreak of Covid-19.

V.      SEMINAR FORMAT AND STRUCTURE

1.     Seminar format

As the 2021 seminar is conducted wholly online without field trips, it will be delivered in diverse formats to maximize the engagement of participants, including faculty lectures, guest talk/presentation, panel discussion, team projects (discussed below) and class discussion.

Team project: participants from at least two nations will work in a team and deliver a presentation on issues relevant to the seminar topics, which are digital society, digital economy, and data privacy and cybersecurity. Comparative and cross-nation analyses and views are encouraged as they will benefit all participants with practical, diverse and updated perspectives of the current state of technology and innovation in Southeast Asia.

2.     Structure

There are totally 23 sessions in two weeks (Monday – Friday), 2 sessions/day (morning, afternoon, or evening).

Due to the time zone constraint (with international speakers), the seminar is mostly conducted in the afternoons and evenings. The 90-minute evening sessions are lectures; the 2-hour afternoon sessions are guest talks, panel discussion, leadership workshop or participants’ teamwork. From next year the afternoon sessions will include field trips. The seminar schedule is based on Hanoi/Bangkok time (11 hours ahead of Boston).

9 sessions for lectures (scholars together with guest speakers, if any).
4 sessions for panel discussions/industry experts.
8 sessions for leadership workshop, networking, teamwork, and team presentations.
1 welcoming session and 1 closing session, including class review (reflection, Q&A, comments) and graduation ceremony.
