Distinguished Lecture by Professor Roger Clarke at the YSEALI Academy at Fulbright University Vietnam

June 02, 2022

HO CHI MINH CITY, 24 May 2022 — The YSEALI Academy at Fulbright University Vietnam (hereinafter the YSEALI Academy) is pleased to announce that Professor Roger Clarke will be giving the Distinguished Public Lecture at the 2022 YSEALI Academy Technology and Innovation Seminar on 7 June 2022.

Roger Clarke is a consultant in strategic and policy aspects of disruptive information technologies. He has over 50 years' experience in the industry, as a professional, manager, consultant and researcher. He is also a longstanding Fellow of the Australian Computer Society and the international Association for Information Systems. His degrees are from the University of New South Wales in Sydney and Australian National University in Canberra. He has held Visiting Professorships in Wirtschaftsinformatik in Switzerland and in Austria, and in the Engineering Faculty at the University of Hong Kong. He continues as a Visiting Professor in Computer Science at the Australian National University, and in Law at University of New South Wales.

In his talk entitled “40 Years of I.T. and A.I. and What It Tells Us About the Next 20 Years”, Dr. Roger Clarke will highlight how the original idea of Artificial Intelligence (old A.I.) - a simulation of human intelligence - has proven to be an ill-judged quest. In addition to leading too many researchers repetitively down too many blind alleys, the idea embodies far too many threats to individuals, societies and economies. After 70 years, it is time to redefine the field. A review of its origins and history points to Augmented Intelligence (new A.I.), which complements human intelligence and has greater potential value. Young leaders of today need to manage technology and organizations towards the complementary capability of machines and the real goal: Augmented Capability (AC).

The Distinguished Public Lecture Series is the YSEALI Academy’s quarterly event to provide the YSEALI community and international public audience with up-to-date knowledge and information around the themes of entrepreneurship, public policy, and technology & innovation. In 2021, the YSEALI Academy was honored to host Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus in our first Distinguished Public Lecture.

The talk will take place virtually on 7th June, from 6:45 PM to 8:30 PM (Ha Noi/Bangkok Time, UTC +7), and will be livestreamed on Young Southeast Asia Leaders Initiative, the YSEALI Academy at Fulbright University Vietnam, and Fulbright University Vietnam’s Facebook Pages. Interested guests can register at https://bit.ly/DistinguishedLecture7June to join the event on Zoom.
