Topic: Offshore wind energy: Development trends, Opportunities, Challenges and Solutions for Risk reduction

Dr Nguyen Dinh is the Director (Principal Investigator) of R&D projects in offshore wind to hydrogen, hydrogen hubs and markets, offshore power cables, offshore wind substructures, and floating wind pilot at the MaREI National Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine; University College Cork, Ireland. Nguyen has been a Senior Research Fellow – the highest research title and managing a multi-disciplinary research team and experts from 10 companies from 6 countries for the development of the national offshore wind energy blueprint in Ireland 2020 - 2050. He has been an advisor for several companies in Ireland, UK, Norway and The Netherlands. He was a senior engineer at Wood Plc and developed modelling tools for floating offshore wind turbines, wave energy converters, moorings, risers and 3-D seabed profiles. Prior to that, he was a Marie-Curie post-doctoral researcher at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and developed new controllers and coupled models for floating offshore wind turbines and wave energy converters, and new models for time-frequency and stochastic analysis of structures under nonstationary spatially-varying earthquake excitations.

Nguyen’s PhD outcome won the Mitsui-Sumitomo Insurance Welfare Foundation Research Award (Japan) in 2009 leading to his appointment as an Assistant Professor at Konkuk University in South Korea prior to moving to Europe. He is a member of the Association of Vietnamese Scientists and Experts (AVSE Global), a co-ordinator of the International Scientific Committee at the Second Vietnam Symposium on Advances in Offshore Engineering (VSOE 2021) to be held in Ho Chi Minh city on 1-3 November 2021. He was a key organising member at VSOE2018 and the Vietnam Sustainability Forum (VSF) in Hanoi in 2018. He has also provided support for national offshore wind energy development in Vietnam since 2015 including international experience review, policy recommendations, assessment of resource and infrastructures, zoning, and training.
