Research

After more than 10 years of research in the field of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental diseases, my research focus has recently shifted towards understanding and improving mental wellbeing at the individual and organizational level in Southeast Asia. Mental health burden is rampant in Southeast Asia, and the shortage of qualified counsellors necessitates the development of scalable on-demand interventions for improving mental helath. My research team and I are developing effective, scalable digital and peer-to-peer solutions for Southeast Asian Youth for the detection and improvement of mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. I am further interested in developing cultural adaptation frameworks to translate and localize modern "western" therapeutic concepts into the Southeast Asian context. Conversely, I am interested in researching traditional plant medicine and natural products that can be harnessed for improving mental health. I am always excited to work with driven students and enagage in innovative research collaborations.
